UIL BOYS BASKETBALL: STATE TOURNAMENT REPORT

The 2018 boys state tournament tipped off Thursday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Here’s a brief review of the action, which continues through Saturday:

STAR TURNS

The top individual performances on the opening day of the tournament:

Layton Sharp, Lipan: A 6-foot-2 junior, Sharp sank seven 3-pointers in a dozen attempts to help the Apaches — the defending Class A champions — to a state-semifinal victory.

Jake Gerber, Nazareth: Gerber, a 6-4 junior, posted a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds as Nazareth advanced to the Class A final.

Daniel Mosley, Bowie: Missing only one shot during the entire game, Mosley totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Grandview. A 6-5 junior, he was 7 of 8 from the field and 1 of 1 at the free-throw line.

Tyler Cooper, Mount Vernon: A senior guard, Cooper had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as the Tigers topped Santa Rosa in a Class 3A semifinal.

DID YOU KNOW?

Nazareth and Mount Vernon advanced to state finals with victories Thursday at the Alamodome, giving those schools opportunities to complete championship sweeps this season.

Last week, the Nazareth girls defeated Dodd City 56-43 to win the Class A state title shortly before Mount Vernon claimed the Class 3A crown with a 51-47 victory over Marlin.

In 2017, no school won state titles in both boys and girls basketball.

HOME TEAM HIGHLIGHT

Looking back at a memorable victory for an Austin-area boys team at the state tournament:

Excluding Thorndale’s two-year run that ended in Class A, Division I state titles in 2007-08, the last victory at state by an area team came in 1995, when an Anderson squad led by McDonald’s All-American Kris Clack defeated Wichita Falls 77-57 in a Class 4A state semifinal.

Clack piled up 27 points in the Trojans’ victory, and his 6-9 teammate William Stringfellow added 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.
