UIL, TAPPS postseason schedule update

Two points separated the Regents football team from a TAPPS Division II state title last season. On Friday, the Knights will get a second shot at winning their third state championship as a TAPPS 11-man squad.

Regents won five TAPPS championships from 2001-10 — the first three as a six-man team, the final two as an 11-man squad — but the Knights are 0-2 in more recent state-title contests. In 2012, they lost to Bullard Brook Hill 26-3 in the TAPPS Division III final. Last fall, they fell to Grapevine Faith Christian 30-29 in overtime when a two-point conversion attempt failed.

Along with the TAPPS Division II final in Waco, the week’s postseason schedule includes a variety of state quarterfinals involving area teams. Here’s the schedule:

Gammerdinger plans to carry football torch forward at McCallum

Like thousands of Austinites, Thomas Gammerdinger spent more than a few nights last month watching the Winter Olympics unfold in Pyeongchang, South Korea. And when the games opened with the traditional lighting of the Olympic flame, Gammerdinger, who’s set to become McCallum’s next head football coach, found an apt comparison to the Knights&rsquo...

Faces Off the Field: McKynna Hale, senior shortstop, Luling

What do you remember about the first time you played organized softball? I was 10 and it was in Corpus Christi. The coaches were hitting to us, and I got my tooth knocked out. I buried it in the dirt and continued playing. When did you know you might be pretty good at softball? I knew I was pretty good when the other teams’ parents would personally...
