Steelers LT Alejandro Villanueva including teammates in his tribute to the army

Veterans day is Saturday, and is Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Alejandro Villanueva using it to honor the military in his own way.

Before Villanueva became an NFL player, he was an army ranger and served Afghanistan. He received a National Defense Service Medal, and a Bronze Star. Villanueva will be honoring the veterans during the Steelers’ game on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, and his teammates will be joining him.

They will be wearing decals on their helmets that represent the 13 different divisions in the army. Villanueva distributed the decals to players based which unit he feels their personalities represent.

“It’s just a small-unit patch that really doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but the history behind it means the whole world to a lot of veterans,” Villanueva said, via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “They died for that patch. When you watch the Steelers on Sunday and you see the flash of the 10th [Mountain] division and the 7th [Infantry] division … you’re calling out specific units.”

This was a great idea by Villanueva.

Before each game on Sunday there will surely be a huge presentation involving the military like there is before ever game. However, this feels more personal. This is a decorated soldier making simple, yet extremely specific, show of appreciation to those who have served.
