This weekend’s game between Tennessee and Florida was surrounded with uncertainty due to Hurricane Irma before the schools announced on Tuesday the game would be played in Gainesville as scheduled.
Vols coach Butch Jones said on the weekly SEC football teleconference that the uncertainty around the game itself didn’t impact his team.
“As a football coach, you want to be able to focus on getting your team ready to play, but it’s always in the back of your mind and I thought our administration did a great job of handling that,” Jones said.
With the winner of the game likely to take control of the SEC East, both squads desperately need the victory. With such high stakes, Jones has kept his team focused on the task at hand, despite the obvious distractions.
“You can only control what you can control,” Jones said. “We’ve been focused and we’ve anticipated that the game was going to be played on Saturday and that it would be played in Gainesville, so it really hasn’t taken us off course.”
Tennessee won last year’s battle in Knoxville, but that was its first win in the series since 2004. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET.
