Ellis, Tovar carry Memphis to win over Round Rock


Wilfredo Tovar hit a two-run home run and had three hits as Chris Ellis threw five scoreless innings, leading the Memphis Redbirds to an 8-4 win over the Round Rock Express Wednesday at Dell Diamond.

The result put an end to a three-game winning streak for the Express (62-73).

Ellis (6-4) allowed two hits while striking out three and walking one to get the win.

Memphis started the scoring in the second inning when Lane Thomas hit a two-run home run. Thomas scored twice on the night.

The Redbirds (81-54) later added runs in four additional innings to secure the victory.

Edmundo Sosa hit a home run in the third inning. He drove in two runs and crossed home plate twice for the Redbirds. Randy Arozarena scored three runs for Memphis while Max Schrock went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs and six hits in the Pacific Coast League game. He also struck out seven and walked three.

Tommy Joseph went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a double and a run scored for the Express. Tony Sanchez also had two hits, also driving home a run. Nick Noonan led the Express with a double and two runs batted in.

The Express scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.
