Sports reporter, high school and UT women's basketball

Rick Cantu, for better or worse, has written sports for the Statesman since 1990. Began by covering University of Texas football and UT women's hoops. Beats have changed over the years and I've covered Texas A&M sports, UT baseball, the Dallas Cowboys (8 years) and now primarily high school sports. We have about 75 public and about 10 private high schools in our reading area. Much has been written about Lake Travis, the first high school to win state in football five straight years. I'm also back to writing about UT women's hoops, a fairly big beat here. My cat's name is Rookie and she's eternally hungry.

Quarterback Dru Dawson’s steady hand, combined with four Hendrickson fumbles, propelled Vandegrift to a 29-20 victory...

How did you get involved with cross country? I’ve been running track since seventh grade and I’m in the marching band during the fall. Coach (Marisa) Tuzzi has always been very supportive of this decision, but for my senior year I decided to give cross country a shot. What are your individual goals for the year? I definitely want...

El Paso team’s journey symbolizes coaches’ challenge to find opponents
The football team from El Paso Del Valle was prepared to travel 590 miles last week to play a game in Hutto. Unfortunately, the threat of lightning storms in Central Texas forced the teams to cancel. No sense in spending money for food, gas and hotel rooms for a game that might not be played. For more than 1,300 public high schools in the...

How did you get involved with cross country? My parents coached a running team when I was in elementary school. I was one of the slower runners, but I improved over time.
