Kirk Bohls

Sports columnist

Kirk Bohls was born at the Austin American-Statesman. He worked there part-time briefly before he graduated from the University of Texas, then took a full-time job at the Statesman in 1973 and loved it so much that he never left. Before he became lead sports columnist in 1994, he covered the gamut from high school sports to Longhorn football and baseball to the Southwest Conference and Texas A&M football to the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. He's a Central Texas native from nearby Taylor -- the home of Louie Mueller's barbeque -- loves all things ducks as a former Taylor Duck, works with the homeless and other charities and is the scourge of fantasy football and baseball leagues for decades.

Bohls: Austin, just vote Yes or No and quit straddling the MLS fence
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. Austin can’t get out of its own way. Quit your stalling, put on your big-boy and big-girl pants and either approve the use of McKalla Place for a privately financed soccer stadium by Precourt Sports Ventures or don’t. You either want it or you don’t. But don&rsquo...

Bohls: How soon before Texas is back on top with White, Floreal? A-S-A-P.
To use softball lingo, when it comes to his latest two hires, Chris Del Conte is 2 for 2. He’s batting 1.000. Of course, neither new softball coach Mike White from Oregon nor track and field coach Edrick Floréal from Kentucky has coached a single game or coached up a long jumper as Longhorns. But it’s hard to...

Bohls: David Pierce has Texas baseball on the upswing
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. Texas had an impressive ride this post-season that in some ways mirrored Mississippi State, which once stood 15-15 in the SEC and one strike away from elimination by regional host Florida State. (What exactly does MSU interim coach Gary Henderson, a onetime English teacher...

Bohls: Even in defeat, Pierce has brought Texas back
OMAHA, Neb. — Texas’ trip to the College World Series shouldn’t be remembered for the fact that it was one of the first two teams going home. Instead, these Longhorns should be recognized for just getting here at all. Read the full column here.

Bohls: Pierce took huge gamble with pitching choice
David Pierce may have made his biggest coaching blunder as a Longhorn to date Sunday night. But he clearly thought it was worth the risk. He used his two best pitchers and still lost, falling 11-5 to Arkansas in their College World Series opener. That can be a recipe for disaster in a protracted CWS that forces a first-game loser like Texas...

Bohls: Texas, Perrin found a baseball gem in David Pierce
 His heart was broken.
David Pierce was absolutely crushed two years ago when he was told he would not be getting the head coaching job he so badly
               desired.

“I really wanted the job,” Pierce said Friday, “but they were concerned about my buyout at Tulane. I was devastated...

Bohls: The best recipe to simmer the old Texas vs. Arkansas feud? Equal parts time, separation
OMAHA, Neb. — Arkansas faces off against Texas in Sunday’s first College World Series game that day. To put that into perspective, think World Cup meets Super Bowl. Except bigger. OK, we exaggerate, but beating the Longhorns in anything can be a matter of the highest priority for Razorbacks fans, which
            is why Hogs...
