Kirk Bohls

Sports columnist

Kirk Bohls was born at the Austin American-Statesman. He worked there part-time briefly before he graduated from the University of Texas, then took a full-time job at the Statesman in 1973 and loved it so much that he never left. Before he became lead sports columnist in 1994, he covered the gamut from high school sports to Longhorn football and baseball to the Southwest Conference and Texas A&M football to the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. He's a Central Texas native from nearby Taylor -- the home of Louie Mueller's barbeque -- loves all things ducks as a former Taylor Duck, works with the homeless and other charities and is the scourge of fantasy football and baseball leagues for decades.

From all reports, Robert Downey Jr. remains a bit lukewarm about reprising his role of Tony Stark in the Iron Man movie series
after three editions so far. So in the event he declines, Sam Ehlinger’s ready and able to step in for “Iron Man 4.” After all, out of 131 offensive snaps through three games, the Texas...

Bohls: Cowboys’ defense frustrates 0-2 Giants (again) in 20-13 victory
During what was an otherwise pretty uneventful week, besides the fact the sky was falling in these parts after a disastrous trip to Carolina to open the season, much was made of a relatively innocent comment directed at Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott by loquacious New York Giants strong safety Landon Collins. The Giants, Collins...

Bohls: Will this win over USC spark a Texas turnaround? It’s a start
Texas won a big game Saturday night. Simple as that. Nothing less, nothing more, but the Longhorns’ pulsating 37-14 victory over 22nd-ranked Southern Cal represents distinct progress
for the home team. On every front. Especially for a team that hasn’t won all the little games. Better to be a work in progress

Bohls: Cowboys, Texans need help at the top (bring on Saban, Stoops)
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. If the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans both fired their head coaches this week, would any of those teams’ fans be upset? Neither seems capable of lifting their teams into Super Bowl contention. Dallas’ Jason Garrett, a Boy Scout of a guy but just a caretaker of...

Bohls: Fans are waiting for more than just Bevo to come out of the fog
Just two games into this college football season, Texas is preaching patience. Over performance. Apparently. Both have been very thin so far in the early going as the Longhorns have struggled to find some consistency in matchups with
lesser teams Maryland and Tulsa. After holding off the Golden Hurricane 28-21 at home Saturday...

Bohls: Mond, Aggies looked impressive in 28-26 loss to No. 2 Clemson
The home team’s quarterback dipped and danced and kept Clemson’s vaunted defenders on their heels, and in the final minute was throwing a touchdown pass to his third option. In just his 10th start. By the end of Saturday’s game, the Kyle Field home crowd was loudly chanting their head coach’s name as his team left...
