Gov. Abbott to kick off 3 days of gun discussions Tuesday

Kirk Bohls

Sports columnist

Kirk Bohls was born at the Austin American-Statesman. He worked there part-time briefly before he graduated from the University of Texas, then took a full-time job at the Statesman in 1973 and loved it so much that he never left. Before he became lead sports columnist in 1994, he covered the gamut from high school sports to Longhorn football and baseball to the Southwest Conference and Texas A&M football to the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. He's a Central Texas native from nearby Taylor -- the home of Louie Mueller's barbeque -- loves all things ducks as a former Taylor Duck, works with the homeless and other charities and is the scourge of fantasy football and baseball leagues for decades.

Bohls: Pierce’s Longhorns make some history, grab title
If memory serves, they used to light the UT Tower for conference championships around here. It’s been a minute. Lots of ’em actually. While Texas has been saving on light bulbs for much of this decade, the school will gladly spring for some extra voltage because

 Kirk Bohls released this week’s
nine things and one crazy prediction. A couple were dedicated to the Longhorns and the Big 12. Here are Kirk’s takes on those items: On sports gambling and betting on the 40 Acres: As for this effect on college sports, it might only serve to exacerbate the need to funnel...

Bohls: Resurgent Rockets taking momentum out west after Game 2 win
So the demise of the Houston Rockets after but a single game of this Western Conference finals was greatly exaggerated after all. After such a lifeless performance in a double-digit loss to defending NBA champion Golden State in the opening game of this series Monday night, Houston showed it does indeed still have a pulse. And even better...

Bohls: Crazy to think Texas will approve gambling? Don’t bet against it
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. Texas, get with it. Don’t cut off your nose to spite the faces of every Texan you can help, either in education, health care or lower property taxes. Isn’t this one of the most pro-business states in the Union? Gambling is good business. Most people think our state...

Bohls: Texas-bound Keaontay Ingram to make run at starting spot
If Keaontay Ingram had his druthers, he might have slipped right out of his Carthage track uniform after his final event at
the UIL state track meet Saturday, crossed Robert Dedman Drive and walked into Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center. After all,
Royal-Memorial Stadium is just a javelin throw away from Mike Myers...

Bohls: Precourt still eyeing DKR as a temporary soccer home (if …)
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. Even though Texas seems totally committed to raising at least $140 million on a campaign to renovate the south end zone of Royal-Memorial Stadium, don’t completely rule out Anthony Precourt’s group trying to convince UT to let the Columbus Crew major-league soccer...

Bohls: Dynamic Sophia Schubert leads the Texas women into NCAA regional golf
Admittedly, Sophia Schubert was lost. Totally and inexplicably lost. The golf prodigy out of Oak Ridge, Tenn., had just withdrawn from the 2016 North & South Amateur at legendary Pinehurst
after the then-Longhorns sophomore posted terrible scores of 79 and 87 in the first two rounds. After years of success, starting
