Cedric Golden

Sports columnist

As a kid growing up in Tyler, Cedric Golden always knew he would end up with a career in sports, as either an athlete or a member of the media. Writing won out. Ced was hired by the Statesman in 1999 to cover high school sports. In 2002, he was moved to the college beat where he covered Texas football and baseball. He was at the Rose Bowl for Texas’ first two BCS title wins over Michigan and Southern Cal and at Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium when the Horns won the 2005 College World Series. Ced was promoted to a general sports columnist position in the fall of 2006. He is also the name behind Golden’s Nuggets, his online blog that can be found on statesman.com. You can also follow him on twitter @CedGolden.

Golden: Parker Joe Robinson cleans up messes for Omaha-bound Longhorns
Texas has made it to Omaha for a record 36th time because the Horns got contributions from most every spot, from the bottom of the batting order where Tate Shaw and Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds helped produce runs in the two most important games of the season to a stoic middle reliever who doubles as right-handed fire extinguisher...

Golden: Texas’ Kody Clemens made Tennessee Tech pay for pitching to him. Again.
Note to the pitchers in Omaha: Beware. Kody Clemens is coming. It’s been a simple script for the Texas Longhorns this season: Get solid pitching and ride the Clemens wave offensively. Tennessee
Tech found out the hard way. Pitch to Clemens. Suffer. Lose. Texas 5, Tennessee Tech 2. Clemens supplied more lumber Monday and...

Golden: Good Austin super regional is better with emotion on both sides
Texas and Tennessee Tech just met a few days ago but it didn’t take long for sparks to fly. The Hatfields met the McCoys. When there’s a College World Series berth on the line, it makes no sense to waste time with pleasantries. The Longhorns and
Golden Eagles aren’t exactly brother-in-lawing after splitting the...

Golden: Tennessee Tech is a real problem now, Texas
It’s one thing to walk into a hostile road environment with 52 wins.
It’s more impressive to live that record.
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles are as good as advertised, and the Texas Longhorns, who rolled through the Austin Regional
unscathed, just got hit in the mouth.

Golden: Steely Durant just killed drama — and Cavs — in predictable Finals
We can thank Kevin Durant for making the NBA Finals interesting. We can also dub him Drama Killer 2018. Durant’s Golden State Warriors are about to secure a repeat with a ho-humness normally reserved for people like Tiger, Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson in his prime. At least KD provided us with the seminal moment of the 2018 playoffs...

Golden: Wayne Graham happy to watch baseball, but will he coach again?
We ran into legendary Rice coach Wayne Graham in the elevator Sunday night following Texas’ NCAA regional win over Indiana at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Graham attended the regional as a guest of both UT coach David Pierce — his former assistant — and UT athletic director Chris Del Conte. “I’m wearing this Longhorn...

Golden: Pierce a first timer in NCAA regional winner’s circle
I haven’t seen David Pierce’s contract but I’m guessing there wasn’t any language in there about getting fired if he didn’t
win in the postseason. That sort of thing is just assumed when it comes to Texas baseball. There’s a reason the program has only had three coaches in the last 50 years...

Golden: Aggies on the brink. Will we see a Texas rematch?
“S-E-C!! S-E-C!!” The chants rained down from the stands in the top of the eighth inning Saturday night. Only this time, it came from the lungs of Big 12 fans. Kody Clemens’ routine infield pop fell harmfully to the turf — in between three dumbfounded Texas A&M infielders — prompting
