UT-Austin offering students free counseling sessions

The University of Texas at Austin is working to provide more access to mental health services for students in 2018.

In a statement from President Gregory L. Fenves, the university announced it will eliminate the cost of counseling sessions for students and reduce the cost of psychiatry services from $15 to $10, effective immediately. Previously, counseling sessions cost $10 for students.

According to Fenves, the services will be funded through the multi-million dollar partnership with ESPN from the Longhorn Network.

“I am concerned that these charges have been a barrier for students seeking needed care,” Fenves said in a statement. “This new investment in the Counseling and Mental Health Center underscores a university-wide commitment to addressing the mental health of students. Mental health is not a peripheral issue — it touches every aspect of life and affects us all.”

Fenves encouraged students to contact the campus’ Counseling and Mental Health Center for assistance. The center offers services such individual and group counseling, classes, health programs, outreach initiatives, as well as tools and interactive activities available online and in-person.
