How many hours of work a week does it take to afford rent in Austin?

Besides a lot of stress, what does it take to pay Austin’s infamously high rent rates? According to SmartAsset, a personal finance company, a long work week. 64 hours long, to be exact.

The company calculated how many hours you must work to pay rent in several major U.S. cities. For Austin, ranking 13th overall on the list, SmartAsset assessed it takes 64 hours at $18.64 an hour to pay the monthly rent (including pesky income taxes).

Dallas and San Antonio were right above Austin on SmartAsset’s list, with San Antonio requiring 64.3 hours and Dallas requiring 64.5 hours. Houston took the cake out of the Texas cities, with 66.3 hours required to work. For each city SmartAsset used a different average pay from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 1-year American Community Survey.

At least we’re doing better than California, which has three out of SmartAsset’s top five cities requiring most hours needed to work. The company hailed San Francisco, which required the most hours to pay rent: 89.7 at $21.40 an hour.

In the past, Austin Mayor Steve Adler has  used San Francisco as a forewarning comparing Austin’s slim housing availability and high prices.

Yet things are looking brighter on Texas’ endless horizon: Austin rents were flat during 2017 and are expected to remain stable until 2019, according to the American-Statesman. Experts told the paper several factors contribute to the plateau, such as a slight slowdown in job growth in the region, new apartment construction and renters moving to home ownership.
