Austin police have identified a man who robbed a Wells Fargo bank and tried to rob a Randalls drive thru pharmacy Wednesday as 52-year-old Lyndel Smith.
Police say Smith first went to the Randalls at the 10900 block of Research Blvd., headed toward the drive thru pharmacy and demanded money while trying to force the window open. When he couldn’t, Smith left and ran toward a Wells Fargo located in the same strip mall, witnesses told police.
Smith threatened a teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Officers detained him at a nearby bus stop and recovered the stolen cash, they said.
No one was injured in either incident, police said.
Smith is charged with two counts of robbery by threat, a second-degree felony punishable with up to 20 years in prison. He was in Travis County Jail on Thursday.
This is the eighth bank robbery this year, police said. The case is still being investigated and anyone with additional information is asked to contact Austin police at 512-974-5092 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
