Travis County deputies identify man who died under ‘suspicious circumstances’

Travis County sheriff’s officials on Thursday identified a man whose body was found in southeastern Travis County.

Johnny Cardenas, 31, of Austin, was found dead Wednesday in the 9800 block of Blocker Lane, sheriff’s officials said. His death is being investigated by the department’s homicide unit.

“There are suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Cardenas,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Officials got a call at 2:28 p.m. reporting a suspicious smell in the area near Blocker Lane and Von Quintus Road, which is just west of the Texas 130 toll road and south of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies found Cardenas’ body in a grassy area, about 7 feet from the road, officials said.

Anyone with information about Cardenas or his death should call the Travis County sheriff’s office tip line at 512-854-1444.
