The Austin Police Department bomb squad has cleared a suspicious package was found in a northwest Austin gym parking lot.

APD Assistant Chief Ely Reyes said police received a call at 9:34 a.m. about a suspicious package in the parking lot near a 24-Hour Fitness, 13804 N. US 183. Upon arrival, police called in the bomb squad to inspect the package, Reyes said. The surrounding area was evacuated, he said.

Reyes said the bomb squad used a robot with an X-ray machine to conduct an analysis of the device. The package contained components that led the bomb squad to believe it could be an explosive device.

However, upon further inspection, the bomb squad found that the device did not contain any explosive materials, and the package was rendered safe, Reyes said.

The department is partnering with the FBI and ATF to investigate the incident, Reyes said.

The device may have been configured to appear to contain explosive devices, Reyes said, and that is something authorities will be investigating.

Reyes said police believe there is no further threat at this time to the public, but he urged the public to remain vigilant and “if you see something, say something.”
