Ruben Becerra to face Will Conley in race for Hays County judge

Small business owner Ruben Becerra will move on to face Republican Will Conley in the race for Hays County Judge, according to unofficial voting results.

Becerra, a Democrat, ended the night with 69 percent of the vote, or 6,833 votes, over his challenger, retired Hays County employee Abel Velasquez, who had 31 percent of the vote, or 3,129 votes.

“I feel so happy about it,” Becerra said after all the returns were in Tuesday night. “I’m very grateful. I’m excited about the opportunity to help represent everyone in Hays County because right now many people do not feel represented.”

Republican Lon Shell, who was appointed as Precinct 3 commissioner by Judge Bert Cobb after Conley stepped down to run for judge, is a step closer to being able to finish out the term.
