Concordia High School officials decided to close the Pflugerville private school from Tuesday through Friday after nearly 30 percent of the student body appeared to be out sick, according to the principal.
In total, 35 students and three staff members were out sick Monday, most with the flu, Principal David Mueller said. The school has a student body of 121 students.
“We’re hoping this breaks the cycle,” Mueller said.
School officials began to take extra precautions on Friday, when 18 students were out sick, he said. Crews started de-sanitizing the classrooms and doorknobs and leaving hand sanitizer in every room.
But by Monday, more students had called in sick or left school early because they were sick, and “it was obvious we needed to do something to help our students and teachers,” he said.
Concordia High plans to resume classes on Feb. 5.
