Police ID 30-year-old woman fatally shot at East Austin apartments

2:55 p.m. update: Austin police are still looking for a shooter after a woman was found fatally wounded at an East Austin apartment complex late Tuesday.

Investigators continued to piece together clues about the deadly incident but have not shared much information.

Among the details that remained unclear were the relationship between the victim, 30-year-old Ebony Sheppard, and the shooter; what led to the gunfire; and why the shooter and the victim were at the apartment complex.

1:35 p.m. update: Austin police have identified a woman who was fatally shot at an East Austin apartment complex as 30-year-old Ebony Michelle Sheppard.

Sheppard’s death is Austin’s 30th homicide so far this year, police said.

Police corrected an earlier statement indicating that they had a suspect in custody. No suspect is in custody yet, police said.

Austin police responded to a 911 call around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday about a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 6600 Ed Bluestein Blvd.

Officers “observed Ebony Sheppard with obvious trauma to her body,” police said in a statement Wednesday.

Austin-Travis County EMS took Sheppard to Dell Seton Medical Center, where she died from her injuries at 12:33 a.m., police said.

The Travis County medical examiner’s office on Wednesday determined that the death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.

“Witnesses at the complex were interviewed and advised a possible suspect wearing a dark-colored hoodie was seen running from the scene and fleeing at a high rate of speed in a white sedan from the complex,” police said in the statement.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Austin police homicide tip line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.

Earlier: Austin police arrested a man after a shooting at a East Austin apartment complex late Tuesday that left one woman dead.

The fatal shooting occurred in the parking lot of the complex in University Hills on the 6600 block of Ed Bluestein Boulevard around 11:45 p.m.

“We have a suspect in custody,” said Austin police officer Bino Cadenas, who declined to provide any additional information about the man arrested. “This is a very isolated incident.”

Cadenas said that officers quickly arrived at the scene at the Sixty 600 Apartments and found a woman with the gunshot wound.

No one else was reported injured.

Medics rushed her to Dell Seton Medical Center in downtown Austin, where she died shortly after midnight.
