Travis County flu death toll rises to 32

The Travis County flu death toll rose to 32 on Thursday in the midst of what data shows is an unusually deadly flu season.

More people have died this flu season than any Travis County season over the past ten years.

Previously, the highest number of people to die from the illness in recent years was during the 2013-14 season, in which over 20 people died, including two children.

“It's definitely well above what we saw in 2014-15, which was a bad flu year,” said Carole Barasch,  Austin Public Health spokeswoman. “This is much worse.”

No children have died from the flu this season, Barasch said. Of those who have died this season, about 63 percent of them were older than 80.

Typically, flu season peaks in January and February, but Barasch said her department can’t be sure that flu cases will start to taper off soon due the severity of this flu season.

Flu season “can always extend into April and May,” she said.
