JUST IN: Houston baby missing after mom’s slaying found safe, police say

A 6-week-old infant who was reported missing after her mother was fatally stabbed in a Houston apartment has been found safe, Houston police reported Thursday morning.

Police said via Twitter that Shamali Flores was found early Thursday at a southwest Houston apartment.

“She appears unharmed and is being checked at an area hospital as precaution,” police said. They said their investigation is ongoing and more information was to be released later in the day.

The baby was the focus of an Amber Alert issued Tuesday night for parts of Central and South Texas, including Hays and Bastrop counties.

According to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, nothing was taken from the apartment where the baby’s mother, 33-year-old Carolina Flores, was killed. She was discovered around midday Tuesday.

Police initially believed the baby was with her father, Marcos Mariano Palacios, the Associated Press reported. But when he was found late Tuesday in San Antonio without the infant.

Palacios is not considered a suspect or person of interest in the woman's death, authorities say.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
