Four Texas State students have tested positive for mumps, officials say

Four students at Texas State University have tested positive for mumps, Hays County officials said.

Three of the students are roommates but health officials have not found a link between them and the fourth student, said Hays County Epidemiologist Eric Schneider.

Three other students were tested for the virus after having suspicious symptoms but their tests were negative, Schneider said.

The Texas Department of State Health Services recommends covering one’s mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of the virus, which causes salivary glands to become tender or swell up.

Mumps is spreads by infected saliva or mucus, health officials said

At this time, no other mumps tests are pending at the Hays Local Health Department, Schneider said.
