Austin police are asking for the public’s help in locating man who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman in the Hancock area on Wednesday.

South Austin Hospital staff contacted police Wednesday evening and told them a woman in her early 20s arrived to the hospital saying she had been sexually assaulted, said Austin Police Assistant Chief Joseph Chacon.

Police spoke with the victim, who told them she was leaving a friend’s apartment at the 900 block of Duncan Lane about 8 p.m. when she was struck from behind and knocked unconscious. She woke up at an unknown apartment where a man sexually assaulted her, Chacon said.

At one point the attacker violently struck her again, causing her to lose consciousness once more, Chacon said. When she regained consciousness, the victim was near Duncan Lane, close to where she was initially attacked, Chacon said.

Police do not have a description of the man and said the investigation is still its early stages, but Chacon said the incident appears to be an assault by someone who didn’t know the victim. People in the area should be aware of the incident and “do everything they can to make sure they’re safe in the evening,” he said.

“This is obviously very concerning for us because we don’t have that many stranger assaults that occur and we don’t want them to continue,” Chacon said.

The incident happened a few blocks north of the University of Texas but Chacon said he doesn’t believe the victim is a college student.

Austin police are asking for anyone with information about the incident or the attacker to contact their sex crimes unit at 512-974-5095 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS. People can also submit a tip by texting “Tip 103” plus a message to CRIMES, or by using the Crime Stoppers or Austin police app, available on iPhone and Android
