How one Austin affordable housing district escaped Abbott’s veto


Gov. Greg Abbott and his veto pen will not kill the city’s “homestead preservation district” program, city officials said. But the veto will keep it from growing.

Among the 50 measures Abbott vetoed Thursday was a bill that would allow Austin to continue creating specific zones where tax dollars can help create affordable housing.

City officials say the veto will not affect a fully established district in East Austin, but it will prevent the city from raising revenue for affordable housing in three other districts that have been feeling the squeeze of gentrification.
