In Houston, drink a Texas beer, help save a Texas icon

Houston craft brewery Karbach Brewing Co. is hosting a party at its biergarten on Saturday, July 21. Karbach parties often, celebrating things from bingo to yoga to the Tour de France — but this is for something much, much bigger.

Karbach is hosting the “Come and Save It” event to raise funds for the preservation of the Battleship Texas.

"It's a Texas landmark and something we need to do our best to hold onto for future generations to experience,” Karbach brand manager David Graham told the Houston Chronicle recently.

Among the events on tap at the brewery’s biergarten on July 21 is a “life size battleship game.”

If you have fond feelings for the ship at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, but can’t make it to Houston next week, never fear: the “Come and Save It” campaign is coming to Austin’s Friends and Allies Brewing on Aug. 18.

More than 100 years old the Battleship Texas served during World War I and played a key role in World War II’s D-Day invasion of Normandy. She was decommissioned in 1948 and acquired by Texas, where she serves as a floating museum and a memorial.
