Funeral arrangements set for former Austin Bishop John McCarthy


A funeral Mass and burial for retired Austin Diocese Bishop John McCarthy will take place Friday afternoon in Round Rock.

McCarthy, who led the Catholic Diocese of Austin for 15 years and was known for interreligious work and dedication to the poor, died Saturday at his home at the age of 88, church officials announced Sunday.

There will be a public viewing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Cathedral in downtown Austin, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m. at St. William Parish in Round Rock.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Thursday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Public viewing, St. Mary Cathedral, 203 E. 10th St., Austin

Thursday, Aug. 23, 7 p.m.: Vigil, St. William Parish, 620 Round Rock West Drive, Round Rock with Bishop Joe Vásquez officiating.

Friday, Aug. 24, 2 p.m.: Mass of Christian Burial, St. William Parish, 620 Round Rock West Drive, Round Rock; presider, Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza; homilist, Msgr. Elmer Holtman.
