FORECAST: Mostly sunny and hot, small chance of afternoon rain

Thursday forecast for Austin: A small chance of rain is possible in the afternoon through the evening, the National Weather Service said.

Despite the 20 percent chance of rain, skies in Austin will be mostly sunny and temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees with a heat index of 100, forecasters said.

The heat index value reflects how the outside air can feel hotter than what the thermometer says because high humidity makes it harder for your body to cool off.

Overnight temperatures are expected to stay above 76 degrees, forecasters said.

The weekend is expected to be a hot one, according to the weather service’s extended forecast:

Friday: Partly sunny with a high near 96 and a heat index as high as 102. At night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 75.

Saturday: Mostly sunny and hot with a high near 96. At night, it will be partly cloudy with a low around 75.

Sunday: Sunny and hot with a high near 97. At night, it will be mostly clear with a low around 75.

Monday: Sunny and hot with a high near 98. At night, it will be mostly clear with a low around 74.

Tuesday: Sunny and hot with a high near 99. At night, it will be mostly clear with a low around 75.

Wednesday: Sunny and hot with a high near 99.
