Firefighters on Tuesday night extinguished a fire at the Avesta apartment complex in North Austin for the second time this year.
First-responders who arrived to the 8800 block of North Interstate 35 just before 9:30 p.m. could see smoke coming from the chimney. The fire, caused by improperly discarded smoking material, was in the exterior wall of the third floor, Austin Fire Department officials said.
A “quick attack limited damage to the exterior wall,” the fire department tweeted.
The fire caused about $5,000 in damage to the structure, but the apartment’s contents were not destroyed, fire officials said. Residents will be able to re-occupy the apartment unit, fire officials said.
On Jan. 4, a blaze ripped through several units and part of the roof of one of the apartment buildings in that complex.
