DPS: Trooper wounds Leander man during car chase Saturday night


During the pursuit of a stolen vehicle Saturday night, a Texas state trooper shot a 21-year-old Leander man, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.

According to DPS, the wounded man was identified as Dustin Lee Dougherty of Leander. He was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released before being booked into the Travis County Jail. Officials said Dougherty was charged with assault on a public servant, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest/detention.

The chase began at approximately 10:16 p.m. Saturday in Austin as the DPS trooper began pursuing a stolen vehicle. Initial information indicates that during the course of the chase and a assault to the trooper, the trooper discharged his firearm striking the suspect.

The shooting took place in the 100 block of Fawnridge Ridge Drive in North Austin, the DPS release stated.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, officials said.
