Permanent donation locations are at 4300 N. Lamar Blvd. and 3100 W. Slaughter Lane in Austin; and at 2132 N. Mays St., Suite 900, Round Rock.

People with Type O-negative blood have red blood cells that can be transfused to people with any blood type. More than 40 hospitals and medical facilities in a 10-county area depend on blood provided by the organization.

Adopt a heartworm-positive dog

The Austin Animal Center will have a promotion through Monday where adoption fees for heartworm positive dogs will be $20.

The center, at 7201 Levander Loop, will also give adopters a free crate, a voucher for free heartworm treatment through Emancipet and six months of heartworm preventative.

Shelter dogs who have tested positive for heartworms often get overlooked by potential families, and center staff want adopters to know that if left untreated, heartworms can be serious, but treatment is simple and free for Austin shelter dogs.
