Central Texas blood bank seeks donors for ‘universal’ type O negative blood

We Are Blood, Central Texas’ blood bank, is running low on type O negative blood after medical emergencies in the area and needs donors, officials said.

The bank needs 40 type O negative donors to give blood each day to keep up with demands, but on Tuesday, it only had two such donors, said Marian Garrard, We Are Blood’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“Over the last few weeks, due to multiple traumas, the demand for O negative blood has been much higher than the amount donated,” Garrard said.

More than 40 hospital and medical facilities in the area depend on We Are Blood to provide type O negative blood, the “universal donor” blood that can be transfused into people with any blood type, officials said. Its universal use makes the blood type particularly scarce.

If you have type O negative blood and are looking to donate, you can visit three donation locations in Central Texas:

  • North Austin at 4300 N. Lamar Boulevard
  • Round Rock at 2132 N. Mays, Suite 900
  • South Austin at 3100 W. Slaughter Lane
