Austin’s City Council convenes again Thursday, when one of the most-watched debates will center around a proposal to increase the city’s homestead tax exemption from 8 to 10 percent. The proposal was put forth by Council Member Ellen Troxclair, who returns to the dais this week after being on maternity leave.
The Council also is expected to approve Brian Manley as the permanent chief of Austin police. Manley has been serving as the department’s interim chief for roughly 18 months. On another police-related matter, council members will consider reinstating some of the specialty pay to police that was lost when when the contract between the Austin police union and the city fell apart at the end of 2017.
Another item on the agenda calls for lessening the restrictions on taxis and limos to allow them to better compete with such ride-hailing services as Uber and Lyft.
