Help rename 5 Austin schools as district sweeps out the Confederates

Just days after a divided Austin school board voted to remove Confederate names from five schools, the district is taking submissions for new names.

When the district sought suggestions to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary, school leaders received 240 suggestions, with some appearing in protest of the change including Adolf Hitler School of Friendship and Tolerancy, Ignorance is Bliss, Hypothetical Perfect Person Memorial and Bleeding Heart Liberal.

The majority of the support was for Russell Lee Elementary, which the board approved.

The campuses to be renamed are:

• The Allan facility (the former Allan Elementary), named for John T. Allan, an officer in the Confederate army.

• Reagan High School, named for John H. Reagan, the Confederacy’s postmaster general.

• Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston campus, which is named for Gen. Albert S. Johnston.

• Lanier High School, named for Sidney Lanier, a noted poet who fought for the Confederacy.

• Fulmore Middle School, named for Zachary Taylor Fulmore, a private in the Confederate army.

Nominations may be submitted online at www.austinisd.org/naming, in person or by mail at Community Engagement Office, Facility Naming Team, 1111 W. Sixth St., A-230, Austin, TX 78703.

Submissions will close at 5 p.m. March 16. District staffers will compile the nominations and work with each school’s advisory councils in narrowing the list to put before the school board.
