UPDATE: Man accused of killing San Marcos officer booked into jail

The man accused of killing a San Marcos police officer outside his home on Monday afternoon has been booked into the Hays County Jail.

Stewart Thomas Mettz, 51, is being held on charges of family violence assault, injury to the elderly and capital murder of a police officer in connection with the shooting death of Kenneth Copeland, who was killed while serving a warrant at Mettz’s home on Dec. 4.

Mettz, who was also shot during the incident, was taken to a Central Texas hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

He was booked into the facility by proxy, and remains under a 24-hour guard by members of the Hays County sheriff’s office.

Jail records show he was booked into the facility on Wednesday.

He is being held without bond for the capital murder charge, and bail for the two other charges have been set at $500,000 each.
