Spike, Rian, Lena and Wright!
Look for Oscar- winning director, writer, producer and Knicks lifer Spike Lee, actress, writer, controversy magnet and director Lena Dunham, actor, writer and country music fan Ethan Hawke, “Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi” and “Brick” director Rian Johnson; and Westworld cast members Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and noted one-of-the-best-actors-alive Jeffrey Wright to speak at South By Southwest 2018.
Keynote speakers already announced for the film portion of SXSW 2018 include Darren Aronofsky and Barry Jenkins
Also on tap: An interview with “60 Minutes” executive producer Jeff Fager conducted by the program’s own Lara Logan.
“Girls” creator, writer, producer, etc. Dunham will chat with Glamour editor-in-chief Samantha Barry, probably about all things Dunham.
In the “Female Voices of Film Twitter Featured Session,” Fandango correspondent and author Alicia Malone will moderate a conversation on the importance of the female voice in film commentary and social media with Amy Nicholson (Variety, The Canon), Jen Yamato (Los Angeles Times), and Monica Castillo (New York Times).
Dunham’s career in linked intimately to SXSW. The festival screened her film “Creative Nonfiction” in 2009, the same festival where she met several collaborators with whom she would work on her film “Tiny Furniture” and the HBO show “Girls,” which premiered at SXSW in 2012.
Hawke will likely discuss “Blaze,” the Blaze Foley feature film he wrote, produced and directed.
Johnson joins his longtime producer Ram Bergman to discuss “Brick,” “Looper” “The Brothers Bloom” and “Star Wars.”
Lee is, of course, one of the premier American directors of his generation.
In terms of recent work, his film of the play “Pass Over” premiered at Sundance. He also directed the Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It,” which will be returning for a second season, and has just finished principal photography on his latest project, “Black Klansmen.”
His film “Do the Right Thing,” one of the closest things to a Greek tragedy 1980s cinema produced, should be required viewing to be an American.
I am also incredibly fond of “School Daze” and the insanely slept-on, totally brutal “Bamboozled.”
Holy cats, Tatiana Maslany is coming here.
Maslany is best known as the lead actress (in which she played roughly elventy billion roles) in the Canadian TV show “Orphan Black,” a role for which she won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2016. “Orphan Black” recently concluded its fifth and final season. If you have never seen this show, her performance(s) have to be seen to be believed. For five years, she had the hardest job in TV, full stop.
“Westworld” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy join aforementioned cast members Evan Rachel Wood, James “Cyclops” Marsden, and the almighty Jeffrey Wright to yack about the HBO series.
SXSW 2018 will take place March 9 to 18.
