Reviewing ItsEasy’s remarkably simple in-app passport renewal process

Renewing your passport is a pain. It ranks right up there with visiting the DMV and going in for a root canal as things you would want to do with your free time.

In an era of automation, however, this doesn’t have to be the case. This year, I tried and fell in love with ItsEasy’s app and its promise of a simple and efficient way to renew my passport.

ItsEasy has a nice website as well as a service that has been around for nearly four decades.

However, when it came time to re-up on the ol’ passport, I decided it was time to get with the times and do everything in-app, which I was able to accomplish in what had to be one of the easier travel chores I ever had to deal with.

The app, which allows you to take a passport photo from the comfort of you home, is available in iOS and Android flavors.

Instead of going the usual route for my renewal, I decided it was time to stay home, throw money at an in-app purchase and let my passport experience come to me.

In total, I paid just under $200, $199.95 to be exact, for a renewed passport book and expedited processing ($29.95).

Compare this to the regular cost of about $110, which doesn’t include the cost (time or money) of heading out to procure a new photo. As you see from the app, you can take an image, which is then sent to ItsEasy for verification to make sure it’s usable. The entire process is a breeze.

Once you decide to renew in this manner, you print out the necessary documents sent to you by email. A shipping label is also included, so all you need is an envelope handy and some tape.

With passport photograph and documentation accepted it was just a matter of a few weeks, about three, for me to get everything back in the mail, and I didn’t once have to set foot outside of the house.

For someone who already has a passport and wants to pay a little bit of a premium for comfort and ease, there is hardly a better solution than ItsEasy.

James Niehues on mapping ski trails

James Niehues is not a typical landscape artist. Yes, he uses watercolors to depict mountains and valleys, the sun and shadows and trees and waterways. But though the results are gorgeous, they are also entirely practical: He paints trail maps for ski resorts.  Since 1997, he has captured almost 200 of the world’s most famous collections...

Now that Cuba is open, Americans aren't going

America, did you miss the travel industry's memo declaring Cuba the hottest new destination?  Apparently. Service to the long-time U.S. foe began in September, but after just five months the largest carrier to the island, American Airlines Group Inc., cut daily flights by 25 percent and switched to smaller jets on some routes. Meanwhile, Silver...

Eiffel Tower view: Paris tourism rises after yearlong slump

PARIS (AP) — Tourism to Paris is showing signs of a revival after a yearlong slump attributed to deadly extremist attacks, violent labor protests, strikes and floods.  The biggest drop came in demand for Paris hotels from Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Italian tourists, according to 2016 figures released Tuesday by the Paris regional tourism...

Get up close to elk and bighorns at winter feeding site in Yakima County

NACHES, Yakima County — The bighorn sheep know when it’s lunch time. Would you expect any less from a creature with a four-part stomach?  Once distant specks against the snow, the California bighorn filed down the hillside at about 10:30 a.m. on a recent Saturday morning, marching in such an orderly row that any elementary-school teacher...

After knee replacement surgery, skiing the Colorado Rockies

I negotiated the chairlift to the top of Snowmass without incident on a perfect blue-sky day in the Colorado Rockies. So far, so good. I took as deep a breath as a person can at 11,000 feet, pointed my skis downhill and made my first turn in the fluffy morning snow — on a brand-new titanium-and-plastic left knee.   A little wobbly....
