Think of it as the cockroach of the weed world. Poison ivy thrives in extreme heat and drought and spreads through the most casual of contact. And, like the crunchy insect pests, it can seem impossible to eradicate. With all of summer's outdoor activity, we're scratching our information itch by looking at what threats the weed poses and how...

‘Stand Up Empire’ captures Austin’s exploding comedy scene
On a Sunday night last December, standup comic Brently Heilbron, along with cohorts Mike Wilson and Chris Shea, put on a curated live comedy show at the Empire Control Room, where Heilbron had been hosting a weekly open mike since March. The bill featured 14 hand-picked comics and a performance by Austin musician Shakey Graves, who played...

‘SNL’s’ Che plays Austin in January
Did you get stiffed by Santa? Then gift yourself with laughter — there are some great acts coming to Austin this month. The current “Saturday Night Live” cast member broke big at Austin’s 2013 Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival, where you could barely walk past a group of attendees without hearing his name. It wasn&rsquo...

Marathons take over TV this week
Aside from New Year’s Eve specials, it’s a lean week for original programming. Still, there are a few stand-out offerings. Here’s what caught my eye on television this week: Sunday: “Undercover Boss” 7 p.m., CBS: Yeah, it’s just a reality program, but it’s one of the only new network offerings tonight...

On TV, it’s fall all over again
In the olden days, there were only three major broadcast stations, plus PBS and maybe one or two UHF channels. There was no such thing as a midseason then, much less a Fox network. Shows were expected to run year-round, except for summer reruns. With the proliferation of cable and online content providers as well as shortened seasons (and...

Family with health issues hasn’t yet seen outpouring of support
When June Bonewitz, 44, was growing up, there weren’t a lot of options for her in the kitchen. “They didn’t make left-handed utensils, so that was a challenge,” she says. That might seem like a minor inconvenience, but June’s lack of kitchen experience was compounded by cerebral palsy. It has caused the right...

Holiday presence on TV this week
Specials were placed on the schedule with care, in hopes that the Nielsen families were there. Here’s what caught my eye on television this week: Sunday: “The Sound of Music: Sing-a-Long” 6 p.m., ABC: The couch is alive with … you know. “Miss Universe Pageant” 7 p.m., Fox: The female Bleem from the planet...

Big love: A tale of a Buda woman and her pet capybara
When you first see Mudskipper Rous, the 6-month-old capybara that belongs to Buda’s Melanie Typaldos, a lot of crazy things go through your head. Is there a mad scientist in one of the rooms down the hall with an enlarging ray? And where’s the oversized hamster wheel which, if wired up, could power the entire town? Have I become...
