Cedric Golden

Sports columnist

As a kid growing up in Tyler, Cedric Golden always knew he would end up with a career in sports, as either an athlete or a member of the media. Writing won out. Ced was hired by the Statesman in 1999 to cover high school sports. In 2002, he was moved to the college beat where he covered Texas football and baseball. He was at the Rose Bowl for Texas’ first two BCS title wins over Michigan and Southern Cal and at Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium when the Horns won the 2005 College World Series. Ced was promoted to a general sports columnist position in the fall of 2006. He is also the name behind Golden’s Nuggets, his online blog that can be found on statesman.com. You can also follow him on twitter @CedGolden.

Golden: Horns might find themselves running to embrace passing game
Tom Herman has been all about physicality during his first preseason as the Longhorns’ head coach. Here’s the problem: his team has some real issues at running back. It will be difficult to rely on a ground-and-pound attack to set up the pass if your grounders and pounders are already dinged before you’ve played one game...

Golden: Saturday showed me the best — and worst — of the times we live in
Racism invaded my home Saturday night. It slithered under my front door, crept up the carpeted stairs and plopped down right beside me. It wormed its way onto my computer screen the same day that Austin said goodbye to a Major League great while the country witnessed the nasty hate crime in Virginia. A former colleague revealed himself to...

Tom Herman gave us a nice lesson in information vs. motivation on Monday. Let’s start with the information. Herman announced that freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger was named the offensive MVP from Saturday’s scrimmage and that defensive tackle Poona Ford earned defensive honors. While most of us in the media believe sophomore...

Golden: NFL’s desire to tackle hot-button issue brings down Ellliott
Jerry Jones went from wearing a yellow jacket at his Hall of Fame induction to singing the blues. In the eyes of the NFL, his best player physically abused a woman on multiple occasions, and for that, Ezekiel Elliott won’t be in a Cowboys uniform for a good long while — at least six games, if you’re keeping score at home...

Golden: Kaepernick deserves his shot, we deserve some honesty from NFL
NFL owners haven’t blackballed free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. And in a couple of unrelated subjects:
The Russians sold us Alaska for $72, not $7.2 million.
               Dial-up is making a comeback.
Michael Jackson never had a plastic surgery.
               The swanky home football lockers...

Golden: Jerry Jones did it his way, and the NFL came to like it
The oil and gas community wondered if Jerry Jones would end up under a bridge after he went all in to purchase the Dallas Cowboys and an outdated Texas Stadium in 1988. His initial investment was $118 million, and Jones famously told reporters that at one time, the franchise was losing $1 million a month in the early days. Seems like forever...
