Brian Davis

Longhorns sports reporter

Brian Davis covers University of Texas athletics, primarily football and men's basketball. He started his journalism career in 1998 and started covering the Big 12 conference extensively in 2001. It's probably safe to tell this story now. After graduating from the University of Texas with a journalism degree in May 1998, Brian applied to the Statesman's internship program and was asked to write the generic "Why do you want this job?" essay. Instead of writing about why he wanted the job, he wrote a paper about all the different ways you can make a martini. He was hired on the spot. Brian left the Statesman and started his journalism career at the Albuquerque Tribune, a now-defunct afternoon daily. Then in the spring of 1999, he moved back to Texas and started working for The Dallas Morning News. Over the next decade, he lived in Lubbock covering Bob Knight and Texas Tech (2001-2003) and then moved to the Adrian Peterson beat at Oklahoma (2004-2006). From there, it was on to cover Texas A&M and Baylor (2007) and finally the Dallas Cowboys (2008).  In early 2009, Brian wanted to try something different, so he went into finance. Brian wound up at Merrill Lynch in Dallas up until he had epiphany. Writing, not watching the stock market, was his passion. He can talk about tax-free bonds all day long, but it's just more fun talking sports. He came back to the Statesman as the Texas football and men's basketball writer in December 2013.

Where are the Longhorns going bowling this December?
Texas coach Tom Herman tells his players to treat every game like it’s the Super Bowl. Every single one is that important,
as was a 28-14 win on Saturday over West Virginia. “Coach says keep pushing,” cornerback Davante Davis said. “We wanted to get to a bowl game bad, so we needed this win bad.”...

Texas 28, West Virginia 14: Longhorns are back in the bowl business after road win
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Like it or not, Texas coach Tom Herman’s going to win or lose in Austin doing things his way. And on
some level, it’s respectable. If that means playing this quarterback or that running back, so be it. Winners get T-bone steaks, and losers get soggy pancakes.

The Whys of Texas: Fans are having second thoughts about Tom Herman? Already?!
At this point, it’s fairly simple. If Texas makes a bowl game, the 2017 season will be considered progress. If the Longhorns
don’t, then it’s a major disappointment. Coach Tom Herman’s club is 5-5 overall and needs to beat West Virginia or Texas Tech to become bowl-eligible. The view here
