Brian Davis

Longhorns sports reporter

Brian Davis covers University of Texas athletics, primarily football and men's basketball. He started his journalism career in 1998 and started covering the Big 12 conference extensively in 2001. It's probably safe to tell this story now. After graduating from the University of Texas with a journalism degree in May 1998, Brian applied to the Statesman's internship program and was asked to write the generic "Why do you want this job?" essay. Instead of writing about why he wanted the job, he wrote a paper about all the different ways you can make a martini. He was hired on the spot. Brian left the Statesman and started his journalism career at the Albuquerque Tribune, a now-defunct afternoon daily. Then in the spring of 1999, he moved back to Texas and started working for The Dallas Morning News. Over the next decade, he lived in Lubbock covering Bob Knight and Texas Tech (2001-2003) and then moved to the Adrian Peterson beat at Oklahoma (2004-2006). From there, it was on to cover Texas A&M and Baylor (2007) and finally the Dallas Cowboys (2008).  In early 2009, Brian wanted to try something different, so he went into finance. Brian wound up at Merrill Lynch in Dallas up until he had epiphany. Writing, not watching the stock market, was his passion. He can talk about tax-free bonds all day long, but it's just more fun talking sports. He came back to the Statesman as the Texas football and men's basketball writer in December 2013.
