Pressure rises to pull parkland as options for MLS stadium in Austin

Texas needs Tim Duncan to help with bigs

I have been a season ticket-holder for the last 10 years. During that time, the UT basketball team has been fortunate to have recruited four tall men (Kevin Durant, Myles Turner, Jarrett Allen and now, Mo Bamba).

When I look at the coaching staff with Shaka Smart, I would say that no one is considered “tall.” It would seem to me to get the best potential out of those players, one of his staff should have been a center in either college or the NBA. There is a recently retired NBA player, Tim Duncan, just down the road who could probably help these tall men reach their potential.

Sure would help future tall recruits deciding to come to UT if sitting next to Shaka was Mr. Duncan.

Texas needs to re-examine its ‘core values’

The Longhorns boasted being No. 2 in the nation in commitments for the 2018 football class. This is great progress and gives promise to the team’s future performance.

I alsw saw a recent video of the team’s locker room that features the team’s “Core Values.” No. 1 Honest, No. 2 Treat Women with Respect … really good stuff. No. 3 No Drugs, No. 4 No Stealing, No. 5 No Weapons … REALLY? From my perspective, Core Values should reflect something much higher than preventing thug behaviors.

If I accompanied my five-star son on a recruiting trip and saw these “values,” we would be on our way to another program. The Longhorns can’t be truly great until they aspire to a higher standard.

Big 12 defenders could take a cue from cop

The Big 12 awards committee was remiss in not recognizing the policeman in Little Rock who tackled a fleeing Baker Mayfield. Mayield was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct when he bolted and ran.

The policeman showed good speed and nice angle of pursuit to make a clean open-field tackle. The recording could be a teaching video for several Big 12 cornerbacks who were unable to do the same.

Texas can’t afford to overlook more locals

I want to know who at UT passed up Baker Mayfield back in 2013, in the Mack Brown era? Do they just ignore local talent? Lake Travis had just won the state championship and Mayfield was a huge part of that. Why did he have to walk on at Texas Tech in 2013 and in 2014 at Oklahoma, and sit out a year?

He really wanted to play at Texas but was ignored, poor guy. He deserved the Heisman for that reason if no other! His perseverance and determination to succeed were not just on the football field.

Running back Samaje Perine of Pflugerville was another local who deserved to be courted by UT but was raided by Oklahoma. And how did Oklahoma State find Mason Rudoloph in Rock Hill, South Carolina? I hope the new AD, Chris Del Conte, will hire better recruiters. That’s where it all begins, with top-flight personnel.

And where it ends is in not keeping that personnel for four years. Or are college sports just the minor league system for professional sports? One reason Chris Petersen of Washington, formerly Boise State, is so successful is because he encourages players to stay and not run off early. It pays in the long run for both the school and players.

Bohls: Rangers chasing Astros, but they won’t catch ‘em

While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. With the Astros the defending world champions, and the Angels and Mariners clearly upgrading their teams, Jeff Banister has his work cut out for him. He’s got a paper-thin rotation with Cole Hamels at the top, a healing Martin Perez and journeymen that the Texas Rangers manager...

Rangers know nobody will pick them in 2018 — just the way they like it

Delino DeShields watched last year’s World Series with a mixture of envy, happiness and dogged determination. The Texas Rangers’ center fielder was the Houston Astros’ first-round draft choice in 2010 and came up through that system until the ‘Stros failed to protect him after the 2014 season and he landed in Arlington...

Clemson-Alabama Part 4 looming? USA Today columnist thinks so

USA Today’s Dan Wolken wrote a piece breaking down the most prominent story lines we’ll be talking about next college football season. At the top of the list: Clemson-Alabama Part 4, which Wolken thinks is “probably” looming. A snippet from his story: Clemson fans would welcome a fourth consecutive shot...

6 former SEC stars make NBA All-Star Game, led by 4 Kentucky alum

When you think of SEC basketball over the past decade or so two programs are likely to come to your mind first: Kentucky and Florida. And if the NBA All-Star game is any indication, that’s precisely who you  should think of. On Tuesday night, the NBA announced its full rosters for the 2018 All-Star Game...
