AHL: Texas Stars fall to Ontario in overtime

Justin Auger’s breakaway goal just over a minute into overtime lifted the Ontario Reign to a 4-3 victory over the Texas Stars in an American Hockey League game late Wednesday night in California.

It was the Stars’ first overtime loss this season after six victories.

Texas got the first goal of the game in odd fashion 14 seconds into the second period. Andrew Bodnarchuk’s shot ricocheted off the end wall, bounced off the back of Ontario goalie Cal Petersen and went into the net.

The Reign tied it four minutes later on Austin Wagner’s rebound goal. Andrew Crescenzi put Ontario up 2-1 later in the period, but Brian Flynn’s short-handed goal made it 2-2 after two periods.

Justin Dowling’s power-play goal four minutes into the third period put Texas up 3-2, but Cory Ward’s first goal of the season tied it 3-3.

In a battle of top AHL rookie goalies, Landon Bow had 29 saves for the Stars and Petersen countered with 22.

The Stars’ California visit will continue Friday night with a game at San Jose.
