Lake Travis fell to No. 3 in the weekly Class 6A state poll compiled by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association after a loss to Vista Ridge last week, and the Cavaliers are in danger of falling out of the state poll for the first time this season after a 2-1 loss to Vandegrift on Tuesday. Senior right-hander Parker Bond recorded his sixth win of the season for the Vipers. … A walkoff RBI single by Jacob Wilson gave Vista Ridge its 6-5 victory over the Cavs last week. The win helped the Rangers secure a playoff spot out of District 25-6A, along with Lake Travis, Hays and Vandegrift. … Hays clinched its playoff berth by sweeping Vandegrift last week, when Rebels pitcher Weston Wolf struck out 10 and allowed just one run in a complete-game 2-1 victory. … Kolby Kelton was 4 for 4 with a home run as Stony Point blasted McNeil 11-1 Tuesday in District 13-6A action. With little more than a week left in the regular season, just a game separates third-place Pflugerville, fourth-place Stony Point and fifth-place Cedar Ridge in the district standings.. … District 19-5A remains tight at the top, with Georgetown and Rouse tied for first with two district losses apiece and Cedar Park a game back with three losses. Georgetown starter Justin Murphy threw a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over Rouse last week, but the Eagles then fell to Cedar Park 3-1 Tuesday. … Since losing to district-leading McCallum 2-0 on March 24, Austin High has won six consecutive District 25-5A games by a combined score of 73-1. Nick Mendevil and Liam Ozdil, who have a combined 46 RBIs entering this week, pace the Maroons’ attack. … A 10-game winning streak has propelled Liberty Hill to the top of the District 19-4A standings and its first appearance in the THSBCA Class 4A state poll. Pitchers Wyatt Cheney (1.16 ERA, 57 strikeouts) and Chandler Freeman (1.01 ERA, 48 Ks) have fueled the Panthers’ surge. … Logan Fisher struck out 11 while holding Rosebud-Lott to two hits and one run in Thorndale’s 8-1 victory last week. MLB's first Lithuanian learned the game where few play

The decades-long journey of a father and a son, of a game and a country, ended with a sprint.  When Dovydas Neverauskas — fresh from the airport and wearing cleats and a glove bummed from his new Pittsburgh Pirates teammates — jogged onto the mound at PNC Park on April 24 to clean up what was left a lopsided loss to the Chicago Cubs...

A snake tale: Close brush with rattler offers chance to disprove myths

Bobby Parker is no fan of rattlesnakes — make no mistake about that. He’d rather crawl into bed with a rabid raccoon than take on a rattler on his Camp Verde Ranch. And since turkey season is the time for seeing rattlesnakes in Texas and Camp Verde Ranch is one place the snakes seem to like, Parker is always on the lookout for rattlers...

Leggett: Mexico’s Comedero as good today as yesteryear for bass fishing

Tall, jagged like a speed freak’s teeth and reaching close to 5,000 feet above sea level, peaks of the Sierra Madre mountain range circle the waters of Lake Comedero, for now keeping cool air trapped down close to the water. Even during the hot part of the midday, it’s still comfortable fishing out here, which some members of our group...
Back-to-back homers by Voit, Kelly fuel Memphis win over Express

Luke Voit and Carson Kelly connected on back-to-back homers in the first inning to help lead the Memphis Redbirds to a 9-1 victory over the Round Rock Express on Friday in Memphis, Tenn. The result evens the series at one game apiece with three left to play. The home runs were both solo shots and gave the Redbirds a 2-0 lead. Memphis added two runs...

NFL draft: Austin High alum Zay Jones taken early in round 2 by Bills

Zay Jones didn’t have to wait long Friday night to be snatched in the NFL draft. The former Austin High star was chosen fifth in the second round by the Buffalo Bills, who traded up with the Los Angeles Rams to grab the record-setting wide receiver from a famous football family. Dealing was en vogue at the top of round two as the first five players...
