LSU 4-star CB commit Maurice Hampton plans to officially visit to Miami

ORLANDO, Fla. — Before he was a top cornerback prospect with nearly a dozen Power-5 offers, Maurice Hampton had Miami on his mind. Long before he made a verbal commitment to LSU in July of 2016, Hampton was thinking about the Hurricanes — the first college school to make a formal pass at the 4-star cornerback.

Miami may have waited until November to offer Hampton as a football player, but the Hurricanes have long been looking at the 6-foot, 208-pound athlete because of his other sport. Back when Hampton was in eighth grade, Miami became the first school to offer him as a baseball player.

“First offer always sticks,” Hampton said Tuesday during media day for the Future 50 at the Under Armour All-America Game. “I like the [baseball] coaching staff down there.”

So, for the Hurricanes’ last home football game of the 2017 season, Hampton decided to make his way to Miami Gardens, Fla. Hampton had finally started to be in touch with the Hurricanes’ football staff and the baseball staff suggested he make his way to Hard Rock Stadium for a game.

The in-person visit did enough to impress both parties. Miami offered him a few days later. Hampton plans to return.

“I told the coaches I will make an official for sure,” Hampton told DieHards.

Hampton remains solid in his pledge to the Tigers, although there’s a long way to go. The junior from Memphis University School doesn’t plan to early enroll and expects to take most of his official visits during the fall. He said he’ll have a final decision sometime near the end of his senior season.

Hampton said he’s talking with director of player development Jorge Baez on a weekly basis and the one visit was enough to throw the Hurricanes firmly into the mix.

“South Florida’s fun to be in,” Hampton said. “I love Miami.”
