How big would the Sal Sunseri hire be in terms of recruiting?

Florida coach Dan Mullen added two more assistant to his staff Wednesday, announcing the hiring of Greg Knox and Sal Sunseri.

Both coaches are monster hires for recruiting, and Mullen desperately needed someone of Sunseri’s caliber. The Gators don’t have any defensive line commits and it’s been a struggle throughout the 2018 cycle.

After signing four players at the position last year, including top-150 overall recruits Zachary Carter and Tedarrell Slaton, former UF defensive line coach Chris Rumph had troubling landing linemen in the Class of 2018.

Florida held a commitment from 3-star end Taylor Upshaw, but he flipped to Michigan in late November. Rumph joined Tennessee’s staff on Dec. 7 and left the Gators without a position coach for the early signing period.

With Sunseri now on board, the defensive line class will look a lot different come National Signing Day. The veteran coach is regarded as an elite recruiter and will undoubtedly end Florida’s drought at the position in the coming weeks.

Suneri has twice served as the primary recruiter for a top-10 overall recruit, landing 5-star offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio at Alabama in 2011 and 5-star defensive end Josh Sweat at Florida State in 2015.

Sunseri also served as the primary recruiter for top-100 defensive linemen Alfey Hill (Alabama, 2010) and Derrick Nnadi (Florida State, 2014).

“Sal Sunseri is known throughout college football as one of the sport’s top recruiters,” former 247Sports analyst JC Shurburtt said in 2012. “Sunseri is well-respected for his ability to build relationships with prospects and their families and sell the program he is recruiting for.”

Mullen has a slew of defensive linemen for Sunseri to recruit in the final month of the cycle. Florida has already secured official visits for defensive tackles Jamarcus Chatman, Noah Jefferson (JUCO) Coynis Miller (Auburn commit), Nesta Silvera (Miami commit) and defensive ends Andrew Chatfield, Dorian Gerald (JUCO) and Malik Langham.

Top-150 DT Rick Sandidage and 4-star defensive ends Malcolm Lamar and Caleb Tannor could also visit the Gators before signing day.
