Coach O says LSU football kicker competition still undecided, could be resolved Thursday

BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU football team’s biggest undecided position battle might be decided in practice Thursday.

On his weekly radio show Wednesday night, LSU football coach Ed Orgeron said that the battle to be LSU’s starting placekicker is still undecided. Sophomore kicker Jack Gonsoulin and redshirt freshman kicker Connor Culp have missed a combined three kicks in LSU’s first two games of 2017, leading Orgeron to open the competition back up after the Tigers’ win over Chattanooga.

That said, Orgeron said he believes the competition might be resolved in practice Thursday.

Coach O: We want to be great on special teams. We have not decided who will be the kicker yet. We will have a big competition tomorrow.

LSU’s practices are closed on Thursday, so the media won’t have access to the kicking competition between Culp and Gonsoulin. Culp connected on a 45-yard kick versus Chattanooga last Saturday, likely giving him a slight edge in the battle. He and Gonsoulin both missed one kick earlier in that game. Gonsoulin’s miss was from 40 yards out and Culp’s miss came from 47 yards.

One place where LSU will not be competing in special teams is for the kickoff specialist battle. Cameron Gamble won that job by consistently forcing touchbacks in kickoff duties versus Chattanooga. Gamble took the job from a struggling Culp, who struggled at forcing touchbacks in LSU’s season opener versus BYU.

The LSU football team takes on Mississippi State in its SEC opener this Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. CT at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss. Luckily for LSU, the Tigers might not end up being the most perplexed team when it comes to the kicking game in Saturday’s matchup; Mississippi State has missed two field goals already in 2017, both of which were blocked.

Stay posted to SEC Country throughout the week and season as we give you all the information you need to know about the Tigers’ kicking situation and all other news pertaining to the team.
