Big 12 home teams haven’t fared well lately with Gus Johnson in broadcast booth

The Big 12 showdown between No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 6 TCU on Saturday will highlight a rare game day featuring three top-10 matchups when the Horned Frogs and Sooners go head-to-head in Norman, Okla.

The game will be FOX’s game of the week — which can only mean one thing: fans will get to hear fan-favorite broadcaster Gus Johnson call the game, alongside analyst Joel Klatt and sideline reporter Jenny Taft.

And the broadcast assignment, for what its worth, is even better news for TCU fans hoping to see their team pick up its first victory at Oklahoma since 2005.

That’s because Big 12 home teams haven’t done so well lately when Johnson is calling the game.

Dating back to 2016, the home team has lost the last six times when Johnson has called a Big 12 conference game. That streak began on Oct. 1, 2016 — ironically, at the TCU-Oklahoma game. The Sooners prevailed, 52-46.

The only exception was the 2016 Texas-Oklahoma game. The Sooners were the “home team” in the neutral site contest in Dallas, Texas.

Here are the complete results of every Big 12 league-game Johnson has been on the call for since the trend began. The home team is listed first:

Another exception came on Sept. 16, 207, as Texas lost on the road to USC when Johnson was on the call. That, however, was a non-conference game.

On Saturday night, we’ll learn if the streak of home team woes with Gus Johnson comes to an end back where it all began, or lives on for yet another week.

In the final week of practice before his final year at Texas, Darrell Royal, if memory serves, took in what he had seen leading up that 1976 season and made his pronouncement. “I’d say we’re about as average as every-day wash,” the legendary coach said. Some three months later, he put the wraps on the best coaching...

If Jedd Fisch was looking for an exciting debut to his career as a college coach, he got it. In UCLA’s first game post-Jim Mora, the Bruins used a game-winning kick from J.J. Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury saves his job with win over Texas

Kliff Kingsbury decided to gamble in the days leading up to Texas Tech’s game against Texas. All that was on the line was a bowl berth for his Red Raiders and possibly his own job. With his offense in a funk and facing another defense geared towards thwarting the pass, Kingsbury called in his starting quarterback Nic Shimonek, the fifth year...
