Alabama football drives the conversation here at the Rammer Jammer , SEC Country’s daily Alabama athletics recap, but we’ll cover news for every facet of the Crimson Tide. Every morning, we’ll be here for the latest on Alabama football, basketball and every sport on campus.
Alabama basketball coach Avery Johnson weighed in on the recent scandal involving college basketball. The Crimson Tide’s former associate athletic director for men’s basketball, Kobie Baker, resigned following an internal investigation . On Thursday, during Johnson’s first media time since the firing, he expressed confidence in Alabama’s compliance staff in dealing with the issue.
“I think I’ve tried to be forthcoming and transparent since I’ve been here, and I want that to continue,” Johnson said. “But as of right now, I don’t have any other updates on that situation.”
Alabama brought in five freshmen this offseason, including 5-star talent Collin Sexton. Sexton is a native of the Atlanta metro area, which is where the meeting that Bryant was involved in took place. Sexton practiced Thursday, and as far as individual players go, Johnson said that Alabama has no issues with eligibility. Johnson also gave a personnel update and said that forward Riley Norris is “week to week” with a hip injury.

On Saturday, Alabama will honor its 1992 national championship team, which was lead by coach Gene Stallings. That year, Alabama went undefeated and beat No. 1 Miami, 34-13, in the Sugar Bowl to capture the championship. Stallings recently recapped that season , while the quarterback of that team, Jay Barker, talked to our own Marq Burnett in an exclusive Q&A.
Loads of former Alabama players from that team will be honored, but one name will specifically turn heads. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney will be in Bryant-Denny Stadium , as he was a member of the 1992 team. The Tigers will take on Syracuse on Friday, so Swinney has the opportunity to return to his alma mater.
Cornerbacks Anthony Averett and Levi Wallace have been shutting down wide receivers for most of the season. Wallace, who recently won SEC Defensive Player of the Week, has had a breakout year, similar to Averett’s in 2016. Normally, the cornerback position is characterized by players who trash talk. NFL players Josh Norman and Richard Sherman have made mind games a big part of player position. Wallace and Averett, however, aren’t like that . They let their play do the talking.
