Oregon promotes Mario Cristobal to head coach

Oregon assistant Mario Cristobal was promoted to head coach a year to the day after Willie Taggart was introduced.

Taggart bolted Tuesday for Florida State, and Cristobal — the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach — was named interim coach for the Las Vegas Bowl. But after a groundswell of support from the players, that interim tag was removed.

“You’ll receive every ounce of effort, sweat — whatever it takes to ensure our student-athletes have the finest experience, from an academic standpoint, from a football standpoint,” Cristobal, 47, said Friday.

Awards: Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield added the Walter Camp and Maxwell player of the year awards and the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback to his AP player of the year award Thursday night. Other awards announced late Thursday were: Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick, Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player; Stanford’s Bryce Love, Doak Walker Award for top running back; Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, Outland Trophy for top interior lineman; Oklahoma State’s James Washington, Biletnikoff Award for top receiver; Utah’s Matt Gay, Lou Groza Award for top place-kicker; former Central Florida coach Scott Frost, who is heading to Nebraska, coach of the year; Oklahoma’s Mark Andrews, John Mackey Award for top tight end; Ohio State’s Billy Price, Rimington Award for top center.

2 Alabama players make fun of Crimson Tide ‘leaking oil’ take that aged horribly

An old column about Alabama didn’t age well. Late in the season, The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre wrote a piece titled, “ Alabama is still undefeated, and this is Nick Saban’s worst team since 2010.” It was published on Nov. 12, a day after the Crimson Tide skirted past Mississippi State 31-24 in...
