Kirk Bohls

Sports columnist

Kirk Bohls was born at the Austin American-Statesman. He worked there part-time briefly before he graduated from the University of Texas, then took a full-time job at the Statesman in 1973 and loved it so much that he never left. Before he became lead sports columnist in 1994, he covered the gamut from high school sports to Longhorn football and baseball to the Southwest Conference and Texas A&M football to the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. He's a Central Texas native from nearby Taylor -- the home of Louie Mueller's barbeque -- loves all things ducks as a former Taylor Duck, works with the homeless and other charities and is the scourge of fantasy football and baseball leagues for decades.

Bohls: Texas’ Chase Shugart short, but not on swagger or results
Veteran relief pitcher Chase Shugart saw his name in the Texas baseball starting lineup for the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette
on Friday night, and he was stoked. There he was listed in the seven hole. The starting designated hitter. At least for a minute. “Yeah, I saw that I was listed as the DH, and I was pumped...

Bohls: Label Sergio Garcia, Austin junior golfers as talented winners
Sergio Garcia has pretty much always led the PGA Tour in labels if not victories, but he’s had plenty of those as well. Perhaps the Tour’s greatest active ball-striker. One of golf’s most consistent players. Outstanding veteran Ryder Cup competitor. Maybe the sport’s most engaging, free-spirited and playful personality...

Bohls: New Erwin Center will seat fewer, attract fewer music concerts
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. There is a strong likelihood that the new Texas basketball arena that replaces the Erwin Center at a to-be-determined site may be cozy enough to create a more intimate setting and better home-court advantage. But it will probably be no bigger than 12,000 seats, which would...

Bohls: Texas’ Shaka Smart is angry, but there’s plenty to go around
FORT WORTH — So, Shaka Smart, are you angry? “Yeah,” he said in the hallway of Schollmaier Arena about an hour after his Texas basketball team fell to TCU 87-71 with a

Bohls: Texas’ Tom Herman, Philly’s Nick Foles are having magical months
While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction: 1. Tom Herman didn’t win the Big 12 yet, but he made a lot of headway with his 2018 recruiting class that should fill holes in the two lines and the secondary. American-Statesman recruiting expert Mike Craven said Texas “should end up as a top-3 national class, and...

Bohls: Texas’ forward-thinking Matt Coleman burns OU
Matt Coleman, you’re forgiven. His all-star performance Saturday night that included a career-high 22 points and some solid defense on Oklahoma superstar
Trae Young that contributed to the Sooner’s woeful seven-of-22 shooting night totally atoned for his dismal game against Texas

Our Take: Bohls, Golden weigh in on Super Bowl LII
American-Statesman columnists Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden tackle key questions ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl LII matchup between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles: 1. Bohls: Westlake, Lake Travis bouncing to new heights in prep hoops
The gym sold out almost 36 hours before tipoff. The buzz was palpable, the anticipation so great the bleachers were nearly packed for the JV basketball game that preceded the main event. Heck, there was so much interest in the athletes on the floor that even college football coaches showed up to watch. That’s how big the high school...
