Take a bite out of Galveston
Restaurant Week showcases the best of the island
If you’ve been waiting for a good excuse to visit Galveston, we’ve got one. From Jan. 12-25, the island will host Galveston Restaurant Week, which will feature more than 30 restaurants offering special prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus.
Participants in this year’s event will include Rudy & Paco — named one of the “Top 100 Best Restaurants in America” by OpenTable — Olympia Grill at Pier 21, the Gumbo Diner, M&M and EATcetera. For a full list and more information about the event, visit www.galvestonrestaurantweek.com.
Sweat it out at sea
Chances are your last boot-camp class wasn’t at sea, but your next one could be.
A healthy alternative to stereotypically overindulgent cruises that leave guests with a few extra pounds to take home as a souvenir, the newest wave in the industry invites passengers to leave the gym at home and get fit at sea.
Crown Cruise Vacations (crowncruisevacations.com) recently offered a boot-camp fitness cruise to Bermuda on board Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas that included kickboxing, yoga, body sculpting, cardio classes and strength training. In addition to receiving 16 hours of group training led by certified trainers, guests spent their down time shooting hoops on the ship’s basketball court and climbing a rock wall overlooking the sea — all while receiving traditional cruise ship perks such as duty-free shopping deals, shore excursions and cocktail parties.
Royal Caribbean isn’t the only ship striving to accommodate active passengers. Princess Cruises (www.princess.com) keeps guests moving with state-of-the-art equipment and an outdoor jogging track, and Celebrity Cruises (www.celebritycruises.com) offers fitness classes ranging from Zumba and indoor cycling to body-sculpting and sunset yoga.
