Texas House approves bill to try 17-year-olds as juveniles, not adults


The Texas House on Thursday approved a bill that would allow 17-year-olds to be tried as juveniles and not as adults, as Texas law requires.

“When this session started, Texas was one of only seven states that held 17-year-olds criminally responsible as adults. Today, Texas is one of only six states,” said the bill’s author, Rep. Harold Dutton, D-Houston, referring to New York’s recent decision to raise the age of criminal responsibility.
