Mexican woman sentenced to 8 years for voter fraud in Tarrant County

A Mexican woman was sentenced by a Tarrant County jury to eight years in prison and fined $5,000 for illegally voting, according to a release from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Rosa Maria Ortega falsely claimed U.S. citizenship on a voter registration form in Dallas County and cast ballots five times between 2004 and 2014, according to the statement.

“This case shows how serious Texas is about keeping its elections secure, and the outcome sends a message that violators of the state’s election law will be prosecuted to the fullest,” Paxton said in a statement. “Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is essential to preserving our democracy.”
