Abbott signs sunset bills, first of special session

Highlights

Senate Bill 20 keeps five state agencies in operation through 2019.

Senate Bill 60 continues funding those five agencies.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed the first bills of the special session to make it to his desk Friday afternoon.

The act came after the Texas House unanimously passed legislation to extend and fund the operation of five state agencies, including the Texas Board of Medical Examiners.

Senate Bill 20 would keep in operation, in addition to the medical board, the boards of Examiners of Psychologists; Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists; Examiners of Professional Counselors; and Social Worker Examiners. SB 60 would fund the state agencies if they continue to operate.

Friday’s vote gives Abbott a special session win, but he wants legislation related to 19 other topics passed and sent to him by Wednesday, the last day of the special session. That doesn’t seem likely, though.
